Egyptian zootypes disprove the “Disease of Language” theory by demonstrating that mythology did not originate from words losing their meaning, but rather as a sophisticated and scientific system of Sign-Language based on natural likeness . According to the “Disease of Language” theory proposed by Max Müller, myths were the result of “words which had lost their senses” . In contrast, the Egyptian perspective argued by Massey shows that mythology is “representation on the ground of likeness,” a method where natural objects (zootypes) were intentionally selected to figure forth superhuman powers . 1. Mythology as “Thinking in Things” The use of zootypes proves that early man was not a “non-verifying visionary” but a man of common sense who “clung hard and fast to the rock of reality” . Primitive man “thought in things” and used zootypes because he lacked the faculty of abstraction to project his own human image onto nature . The Lion (Shu): Force was not initially derived from human muscles but from the wind. The lion was adopted as a zootype for the breathing force of the air (Shu) because its roaring and panting provided a fitting natural figure for that power . The Crocodile (Sebek): Rather than a confused memory, the crocodile was used to image the “Soul of Life in the water” and the solar force emerging from the abyss . 2. Zootypes as Primary “Coins” of Thought Massey argues that these types were not “ignorantly worshipped” but were “adopted for use and consciously stamped for their representative value” . They functioned as the “coins” in a medium of exchange for expressing primitive thoughts and feelings .
