Many cultures around the world have stories of a great flood that wiped out most of humanity and civilization. Some scholars have suggested that these stories may be based on a historical event that occurred around 11,600 years ago, when a sudden and catastrophic rise in sea level submerged large areas of land and caused widespread destruction. One of the most famous and controversial stories of this kind is the legend of Atlantis, a powerful and advanced civilization that was said to have been destroyed by the gods for its arrogance and ambition.
According to Plato, who wrote about Atlantis in his dialogues Timaeus and Critias, the story was told to him by his ancestor Solon, who heard it from an Egyptian priest named Sonchis. The priest claimed that Atlantis was a large island in the Atlantic Ocean, beyond the Pillars of Hercules (the Strait of Gibraltar), that ruled over many other islands and parts of the mainland. He also said that Atlantis had a glorious history of culture, art, science, and military prowess, but that it became corrupted and tried to conquer the whole world. The priest said that the ancient Athenians, who were the ancestors of the Greeks, led a coalition of resistance against Atlantis, and managed to defeat them with the help of the gods. However, soon after their victory, earthquakes and floods struck both Athens and Atlantis, sinking them into the sea and erasing their memory from most people.
