Dr. J. Collins; Scepter & the Star Exposed: Dead Sea Scrolls, Egyptian Myth, & The Creation of Jesus*

Messianic and Biblical Origins: Egyptian Philosophy and Hellenistic Syncretism This briefing evaluates claims that Jewish messianism, Gnosticism, and biblical tradition developed internally within Judaism or Hellenism against evidence for a much older Egyptian and Afroasiatic intellectual matrix.

I. Messianic, Priestly, and Apocalyptic Origins The central question is whether Christian and Gnostic ideas—atonement, divine sonship, redemption, resurrection, and a heavenly redeemer—were original developments or adaptations of earlier Egyptian and Near Eastern traditions.

The “history of dogma” and “Jewish heresy” models, associated with figures such as von Harnack and Friedländer, describe Gnosticism as either secularized Christianity or a deviation within late Judaism. Yet the evidence cited challenges this chronology: Egyptian texts contain concepts analogous to the philosophical “One,” unknowable divine attributes, multiple forms of deity, cosmic emanation, and soul-return long before Plato or Christianity.

The Leiden Hymn CC, dated roughly to 1227 BCE, describes a god of many forms whose characteristics cannot be known. This predates Plato by centuries and complicates claims that such metaphysical ideas were exclusively Greek. Greek philosophy may have systematized older religious concepts, but it did not necessarily originate them.

Likewise, Egyptian and Hermetic traditions contain motifs of bodily dissolution, ascent, rebirth, and restoration to a primordial state. These overlap with later Gnostic and Christian redemption narratives, though overlap alone does not prove direct borrowing. The “Gnostic redeemer myth” may itself be partly a modern scholarly construction imposed on diverse ancient texts.
